GridMatrix

Methodology

GridMatrix uses the U.S. Energy Information Administration Open Data API to show electricity generation for the United States Lower-48 grid region.

Data Source

The live dashboard uses EIA electricity RTO fuel-type data for the US48 respondent. The hourly endpoint reports one data point for each UTC hour, and GridMatrix displays that timestamp in the visitor's local timezone.

Renewable Definition

GridMatrix counts wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal generation as renewable. Battery storage, pumped storage, nuclear, natural gas, coal, petroleum, other, and unknown categories are not counted as renewable in the headline renewable-share metric.

Current Mix

Current generation by source is calculated from the most recent complete hourly US48 fuel-type records returned by the EIA API.

Trend Ranges

Longer trend ranges use EIA daily fuel-type data. Daily values are grouped by day, week, or month depending on the selected range, and GridMatrix calculates renewable share as renewable generation divided by total generation for each time bucket.

Refresh Cadence

GridMatrix refreshes live data every 30 minutes and uses Vercel caching to reduce unnecessary upstream API calls while still keeping the dashboard current.
